Intumescent paint can be applied to a building’s steelwork, to improve its structural integrity, should a fire occur. It is often considered the most cost-effective and efficient method of fire protecting structural steelwork.
The paint will intumesce (or swell) when exposed to high temperatures, and form a carbon layer, char. This thermally insulates the steel protecting it from collapse.
