At TBL Fire Protection, protecting what matters goes beyond buildings. It extends to the communities and environments that surround them.

In Spring 2026, we are proud to partner with Earthwatch Europe to support The Great UK WaterBlitz (24–27 April 2026) — a nationwide citizen science campaign focused on tackling freshwater pollution.

Why Freshwater Matters

Water sustains all life. Yet across the UK, rivers, lakes and streams are under increasing pressure from sewage discharge, agricultural runoff and road pollution.

In fact, over 60% of freshwater sites are consistently rated as poor water quality

The challenge is not just pollution — it’s incomplete data. Many pollution hotspots remain unidentified. Earthwatch is working to change that.

What Is The Great UK WaterBlitz?

The Great UK WaterBlitz is a biannual campaign inviting individuals, businesses and communities to test the water quality of their local rivers and lakes.

Since launching in 2024:

  • Over 20,000 people have taken part
  • More than 11,000 freshwater measurements have been recorded

Participants collect real scientific data that helps identify pollution hotspots and highlight environmental concerns at both local and national levels.

Empowering Communities Through Citizen Science

What makes this initiative powerful is accessibility.

  • 75% of participants had never previously been involved in environmental monitoring
  • Testing kits are free
  • Instructions are simple and easy to follow

Many volunteers go on to form long-term local groups, helping to build sustained environmental monitoring across the UK.

During the September 2025 WaterBlitz, 1,300 participants sent water samples to Imperial College London for further chemical analysis  — demonstrating the scientific credibility of the programme.

TBL’s Role in 2026

As part of our FreshWater Watch partnership with Earthwatch, TBL will:

  • Encourage staff participation during the Spring 2026 WaterBlitz
  • Support community engagement in freshwater testing
  • Receive insight reports detailing findings and impact
  • Explore opportunities for clients and partners to get involved

This initiative aligns closely with our values of responsibility, leadership and long-term community investment.

Looking Ahead

The 2026 Spring WaterBlitz aims to:

  • Mobilise at least 5,000 participants
  • Gather at least 3,000 data points
  • Engage schools and young people for the first time

By supporting this programme, we are contributing to a nationwide effort to improve freshwater health and empower communities with data that drives change.

Because safeguarding the future isn’t just about fire protection — it’s about environmental protection too.
